Hiring Band Director
Big Band Music Director
OVERVIEW:
Dimensions in Sound, a big band with 17 adult volunteer musicians, is searching for a music director. We’re looking for a cheerful, energetic conductor who understands the nature of an adult community band, is able to interact with a variety of audiences, conduct different styles of music, and program appropriate concerts.
COMPENSATION: Our music director will be compensated per rehearsal and performance plus mileage, preparation time and home office allowance.
START DATE: Fall 2021
TIME & LOCAITON: The band rehearses or performs weekly, Tuesday evenings, from September through early May. Rehearsals are held at a Middleton senior living facility where residents are welcome to attend. We perform 14 – 16 concerts per season.
CHARTS: Our music library consists of nearly 600 charts. The majority are 1930s – 1950s big band tunes. We also have many newer arrangements plus polkas and holiday tunes.
ABOUT OUR GROUP:
Dimensions in Sound is one of two ensembles: Dimensions in Sound and The Studio Orchestra, Inc. or “DISSO”. DISSO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1977 and based in Madison, WI. DISSO is led by a Board of Directors; 7 of our 8 directors are musicians in our ensembles. Each year our two ensembles perform approximately twenty concerts at senior living facilities and retirement centers in Dane County for people who are unable to seek out live music on their own due to advanced age or disabilities. We also play for the public at events such as the Badger Honor Flights “welcome home” receptions at the Dane County Airport and for non-profit fundraisers.
Our organization provides an opportunity for musicians to volunteer their talents in the community, and keeps the music of past years relevant today. Many of our musicians have been members for more than 20 years. Dimensions In Sound has 17 musicians: 5 saxes, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, guitar, keyboard, bass, and drums.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Be comfortable and familiar with adult musical groups.
Have good familiarity with big band literature, both traditional and modern.
Be able and willing to provide teachable moments that will help the band become a better ensemble.
Treat all members with courtesy and respect, regardless of their music experience and performance level.
Create a friendly rapport with our audiences.
Listen to comments and suggestions from members while maintaining the discipline needed to meet musical goals.
Be able and willing to address issues such as playing style, section balance and intonation.
Be willing to learn about and be guided by some of the band’s rehearsal and concert history and traditions.
Be willing to meet occasionally with the Board of Directors, and to offer suggestions for the purchase of arrangements.
Be an active part of the fun!
